The right-handed reliever walked the first batter he faced on four pitches, then hit Rico Noel to load the bases. Payne followed with a sacrifice fly to center, extending the TinCaps' lead to 5-3. That closed the books on Rodriguez, who had his second straight shaky outing against Fort Wayne. Rodriguez lasted just 31'3 innings, allowing five runs - two earned - and five hits against four strikeouts and a walk. After Mavarez worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the fifth inning, the Hot Rods got closer when Bortnick laced an RBI single up the middle to make the score 5-4. Bowling Green couldn't draw even, despite having two men on base with one out. Thomas struck out and Wiegand flew out to end the inning. The Hot Rods threatened again the eighth, putting two runners on before Cohen grounded into an inning-ending double play. The TinCaps added an insurance run on a solo homer by Valdez in the ninth.
